Where is Altea?

Altea is a municipality located on the Costa Blanca Norte, in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, the Spanish Levante bathed by the Mediterranean Sea.

It is known as the Dome of the Mediterranean and is considered one of the most beautiful villages on the Costa Blanca due to the beauty of its cobbled streets, white houses, pebble beaches, and the spectacular views from its historic center.

It has a population of 22,000 inhabitants on an area of 34 km2, of which 6 km are coastline. It borders the cities of L'Alfàs del Pi, La Nucía, and Callosa d'En Sarrià to the southeast, and Jalón, Benisa, and Calpe to the north. It is also very close to Benidorm, considered the main tourist center of Alicante.

The minimum temperature is around 16°C in February, and the maximum temperature is 23°C in August. The temperature of the sea water in Altea ranges between 16°C in winter and 23°C in summer. As in the whole Costa Blanca, there are also more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sports all year round

Altea's extensive sports infrastructure allows the practice of numerous sports. This, together with its exceptional climate, has made the town the ideal place to practice sports at any time of the year. For this reason, sports teams from all over Europe have chosen it for their concentrations, especially in winter and spring.

In its six kilometers of coastline, in Altea you have several beaches where you can enjoy the good Mediterranean weather in an uncrowded environment being its beaches of gravel or pebbles, perfect for the whole family.

The most central are its urban beaches, Playa de La Roda and Playa de L'Espigó, located next to the promenade, with all kinds of services and very close to restaurants where you can taste the typical gastronomy of rice, fish and tapas.

Other beaches, also nearby are Cap Negret Beach, with wonderful views of the bay and Sierra de Bèrnia, Cap Blanch Beach, which you find next to the Club Náutico Altea with a length of more than a kilometer or Barreta Beach, next to the Luis Campomanes Marina.

To complete the offer you will find the Mascarat Beach, with incredible views and the Barra Grande Cove, which together with the Galera-Solsida Beach, are naturist areas and you even have dog friendly beaches in Altea, such as La Olla Beach.

The heart of Altea is its old town, a network of cobbled streets that climb to the top of the Plaza de la Iglesia, where you can glimpse this monument of blue domes with white motifs, icon of the municipality.

From this square you can contemplate spectacular views of the sea, to which is added the charm of the artists who try to reflect in their paintings the beauty of the pure Mediterranean that is breathed.

Stroll among its houses with white facades, balconies and doors decorated with flowers and plants and discover its picturesque craft stores, which give a bohemian air to this charming historic center.

Nautical Sports, Altea Port and Promenade

Along the sea that bathes the coast of Altea you have the promenade, dotted with restaurants where you can taste the Altea cuisine based on rice, fish and seafood.

The tour along the coastline, bordering its urban beaches, where you can sunbathe or take a quiet swim, since, being gravel beaches, are usually less crowded. It continues to the port where you can see from small fishing boats to large yachts.

For lovers of water sports the Costa Blanca is a paradise, and in Altea, thanks to its three ports and the Yacht Club, you have a lot to offer such as sailing, paddle surfing, kayaking or diving.

Cultural heritage in Altea

Altea has an attractive cultural and archaeological heritage in which stand out:

  • Roman aqueduct of Els Arcs (2nd century). Originally it crossed the ravine of Les Rotes to carry water from the river Algar to the ancient Roman villa of Albir.

  • Bellaguarda Tower (14th century). It stands on the remains of an ancient defensive tower that was part of the fortification, in service until the sixteenth century.

  • La Galera Tower (16th century). It was part of the coastal network of watchtowers, in charge of warning in case of danger. It is located in the urbanization Galera del Mar.

  • Bastion and Renaissance Enclosure of Altea (17th century). The walls were built after the expulsion of the Moors in 1609.

  • layout of 1617 is preserved, with some of its access gates, buildings of the time and a very good architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

How to get to Altea?

By road

By car you can reach Altea directly from the national road N-332, which connects it with the different coastal towns such as Benidorm or Calpe. You can also get there by the AP-7 highway, which connects the entire coast, taking exit 64.

By plane

Altea is located about 60 kilometers north of Elche-Alicante Miguel Hernández Airport, in El Altet, very well connected by highway. Another option is Valencia Airport which is located 116 kilometers to the north.

By sea

In Altea you have three marinas: Marina Greenwich or Club Náutico Luis Campomanes, Club Náutico de Altea and Porto Senso. With all of them you have more than 900 moorings where you can leave your boat. It is a short distance from the Balearic Islands being 65 miles from Ibiza and Formentera.

By bus

Altea is connected by several bus lines that go to nearby cities such as Benidorm, Javea or Denia to the airports and cities like Valencia and Madrid with the company ALSA.

By streetcar

Altea can also be reached on line 9 of the Tram, the Alicante streetcar that connects all the towns of the Costa Blanca North, from the capital to Denia.
