The new city, with a rectilinear layout, became a flourishing commercial enclave that reached its peak in the 19th century with the exploitation of silver, lead and iron and the construction of the railway and the Hornillo pier by English companies. Today, Águilas retains its seafaring tradition and its deep vocation as a tourist destination.
