Guardamar del Segura, also simply known as Guardamar, is located on the Southern Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, Valencian Community, on the east coast of Spain. It boasts 11 kilometers of beaches and is bordered by the nearby towns of Torrevieja to the south, Rojales and San Fulgencio to the west, and the city of Elche to the north.

It is part of the Vega Baja region, where other towns such as Orihuela or the already mentioned Torrevieja are also located, in the southern part of the province of Alicante. Its name comes from the Segura River, which flows into the town.

Its population does not exceed 16,000 inhabitants in an area of just over 35km2, a number that multiplies during the summer season as it is a city of great appeal for residential tourism thanks to its good climate, beaches, and range of services.

In Guardamar del Segura there are numerous restaurants with national and international cuisine from many countries. Its gastronomy is represented by two autochthonous products, the ñora and the sea prawn:

  • The ñora de Guardamar is a small red bell pepper with a sweet ball, which provides flavor and aroma in the preparation of rice dishes.

  • The Guardamar shrimp, with its characteristic tricolor tail: purple, red and yellow, is fished in the confluence area between the fresh water of the Segura River and the salt water of the Mediterranean Sea.

Every year, since 2005, the 'Setmana Gastronòmica de la Nyora i el Llagostí' is held in Guardamar del Segura, organized by a select group of restaurants that are part of the Guardamar Restaurant Association, and in collaboration with the Tourism Department of the Town Hall.

During this week, the participating restaurants serve an extensive tasting menu that must include a dish with ñora and another dish with prawns, both at lunch and dinner.

Golf Courses in Guardamar del Segura

Guardamar del Segura has no golf courses in its municipal area. However, there are 11 golf clubs in the surrounding area. The nearest are: Golf La Marquesa, in the neighboring town of Rojales (4.7 km.), Greenlands Golf (9.5 km.) and La Finca Golf - Golf Quara (12.4 km.).

In Guardamar del Segura, you have at your disposal the 800 hectares of its natural area made up of dunes and pine forests on the beach. Guardarmar has several public facilities for the practice of multiple sports, among them are:

  • Marina de las Dunas' marina. Located at the mouth of the Segura River in the Mediterranean Sea, it is the only marina in Guardamar del Segura. In it you can practice a wide range of water sports (sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, or jet skiing). It is possible to attend diving, dinghy sailing or windsurfing courses, and to participate in the fishing competitions and regattas organized by the Nautical Club.

  • Sports complex 'Las Rabosas'. It has three soccer fields, one of them with state-of-the-art artificial turf, and an athletics track.

  • Municipal Sports Center 'Palau Sant Jaume'. Located 20 meters from the beach and 30 meters from the Pinada and the dunes. It has 2 multipurpose rooms for the practice of martial arts, weight room, and indoor center court, with equipment for indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

  • Sports Center and Municipal Swimming Pool. It has 4 tennis courts (quick surface), a fronton, 2 paddle tennis courts, 2 multi-sports courts (2 basketball courts and 2 indoor soccer courts) and 3 outdoor swimming pools.

  • Municipal heated swimming pool 'Manel Estiarte'. It has a pool with eight lanes of 2x25 meters where swimming, aquatic matrogym, or aquagym is taught.

What to see in Guardamar?

Beaches of Guardamar del Segura I

Thanks to its 11 kilometers of beaches, in Guardamar del Segura you have a wide offer to enjoy the sea in first line. All of them are of fine golden sand, some surrounded by wilder nature and others located in the town center, with all services.

On the one hand you have the beaches of Centre and La Roqueta, two urban beaches if you want to be close to the city to go to its restaurants, cafes, stores or walk along its promenade, bustling in summer and somewhat quieter in the winter months and very close to the famous Reina Sofia Park.

North of the mouth of the Segura River, you have the virgin beach of Tossals, a naturist beach of more than 1.6 km long, all of it of fine sand and located north of the mouth of the Segura River.

Another beach surrounded by nature, south of the mouth, is Playa del Vivers, with blue flag and surrounded by vegetation and pine forests. In the surrounding dunes you can also visit the archaeological sites of the Islamic Caliphate Rábita and the Phoenician city of La Fonteta.

Then, towards the south, you will find the Babilonia Beach, with more than a kilometer of golden sand and characterized by being flanked by low houses, home of the first vacationers of the late nineteenth century.

In the southern part of the town center you will find the Moncaio Beach, with blue flag and about 1.5 kilometers long, the Playa del Camp, very quiet and surrounded by pine forests and the Playa de les Ortigues, virgin and located between dunes, to enjoy the sea in the middle of nature.

Declared a Site of Community Interest, the Pinada de Guardamar del Segura is one of the most characteristic places of the town. It is a dune forest that covers 800 hectares of the municipality and has trees, pristine beaches and even archaeological remains.

Its reforestation at the end of the 19th century has turned it into a forest space of great value, with pines, eucalyptus, palm trees or cypresses, which can be visited through its hiking or cycling routes. Among them is the Alfonso XII Park, with 8 kilometers of easy trails for the whole family.

In this area there are also two archaeological sites in Guardamar, considered Sites of Cultural Interest due to their historical relevance. These are the Rábita Califal, an Islamic mosque, and the Fontenta, a port city from the Phoenician period. Two treasures that complete a unique space of nature at the foot of the beach.

Another of the most charming places in Guardamar del Segura is undoubtedly the Reina Sofia Park, located in the heart of the city and very close to the beaches. In addition to these spaces, the magnificent natural environment of Guardamar del Segura has:

  • Mouth of the Segura River. The Gola del Segura and its final stretch to the Mediterranean Sea are one of the wetlands of southern Valencia where you can see a large number of waterfowl such as the grey heron, the night heron or the stilt.

  • Natural Park of the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja. Another wetland with an area of 3,700 hectares with an important reserve of birds, among which the flamingo and the black-necked grebe stand out. It occupies the municipalities of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Rojales. The park can be visited on foot, by bicycle or on horseback . It has an Information and Interpretation Center with a large graphic exhibition of the entire saline ecosystem.

Archaeological Heritage I: The Lady of Guardamar

Guardamar del Segura has a rich cultural and archaeological heritage as a result of the different occupations in different historical periods such as Phoenician, Iberian, Roman and Muslim Caliphate. Highlights:

  • Phoenician port city La Fonteta ( VIII to VI B.C.), at the mouth of the Segura River.

  • Walled nucleus of Cabezo Pequeño del Estaño (VIII and VII B.C.), in the Rinconada area.

  • Necropolis and settlement of Cabezo Lucero (VI to III B.C.). Here was found in 1987 what is known as the Dama de Guardamar, a stone bust of an Iberian lady, with clothing similar to the Dama de Elche, dating back to 450-350 BC. It is considered one of the symbols of the city and is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ).

Cultural and archaeological heritage II: Rábida, Castle and Church

Additionally, in Guardamar you can visit:

  • Rábita Califal de las Dunas de Guardamar ( X century), in the dunes of Guardamar, next to the mouth of the Segura river. It is the oldest Arabic Arabic building in Spain.

  • Castle of Guardamar (XIII). It served as a fortress that protected the inhabitants from Muslim attacks. It was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century after which the town of Guardamar moved to its present location.

  • Church of San Jaime Apostle (XIX). It was built in the center of the village after the earthquake of 1829, which destroyed the temple built in 1724, which in turn was built on another temple built in the fourteenth century.

Museums of Guardamar del Segura

Guardamar del Segura has 2 museums:

  • Archaeological Museum of Guardamar (MAG). It is located in the building of the Casa de Cultura. Inaugurated in 1989, the museum exhibits archaeological collections from the various sites in the town.

  • House-Museum Engineer Mira. It shares headquarters with the Tourist Office, next to the Town Hall. It is dedicated mainly to the figure of Francisco Mira y Botella (1862-1944), the forestry engineer responsible for the reforestation of the Pinada de Guardamar del Segura, which was carried out from 1896 to 1930 to stop the advance of the dunes.

Fresh fish auctions

From Monday to Friday, at 10 a.m., and open to the public, the traditional auctions of fresh fish caught by the Guardamarenca fleet take place at the Guardamar Fish Market, located in the Marina de las Dunas Marina and Fishing Port.

The traditional auction method begins with a maximum price, which the auctioneer lowers little by little until the interested party raises his hand and makes the purchase at that price. Most of the trays that are auctioned are 1 kg. in weight.

The fish from Guardamar, fresh and of the highest quality, is landed and auctioned every day at the fish market. The main species caught are gilthead bream, sole, turbot, cuttlefish, red mullet, mullet and prawns (from March to August).

How to get to Guardamar del Segura?


By road

Guardamar is connected to other coastal towns such as Santa Pola or Torrevieja, the airport of Elche-Alicante or the capital by the national road N-332 and is very close to the AP-7 highway.


By plane

Guardamar del Segura is located 25 kilometers south of the international airport of El Altet, Elche-Alicante Miguel Hernández, which is served by direct domestic and international flights from all over Europe and other international destinations.


By sea

The marina of Guardamar del Segura is called Marina de las Dunas, located next to the mouth of the river and the beach dels Vivers, very close to the town center. It has 500 moorings for boats up to 15 meters in length and services such as the Sailing School, the Leisure Center, beach bar and restaurant.


By public transportation

The Guardamar bus station is served by regular bus lines from the main nearby towns of Alicante, such as Orihuela, Elche or Torrevieja, as well as Cartagena, in Murcia. Some of the bus companies are Avanza, Sigüenza, La Inmaculada or Bam. If you come by train, the closest station is the commuter train that goes from Alicante to Murcia passing through cities like Elche or Orihuela, a few kilometers away.
