According to data from the National Statistics Institute, in October 2020, 28,248 mortgage loans were registered for home purchase in Spain, 5.9% less than in October 2019. This represents 5.1% more than in the month of September, and is the best figure since February, just before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. These figures are below those of the previous year, and it is not foreseeable that these levels will be regained in the last two months of the year. The average lending rate stood at 2.47% (2.44% in September). Despite this slight upturn, the data continues to show that the mortgage war between banks to attract new customers via mortgages remains open. This war is marked by low interest rates both in the case of variable-rate mortgages and fixed-rate mortgages. The homebuyer can benefit from both the low interest rates and the good conditions for taking on debt offered by financial institutions. The average amount of mortgages on the total number of properties registered in the Land Registries in October is 141,523 euros, 4.7% lower than in the same month of 2019.
